The 2012-13 season is ready to get started as teams around the NBA are starting exhibition play and up first for the Atlanta Hawks were the NBA champs, the Miami Heat. For Atlanta, its a first run against a real opponent while trying to get used to a bunch of new players and a new system. Starting for the Hawks were Al Horford, Jeff Teague, Josh Smith, Kyle Korver and DeShawn Stevenson. Rookies John Jenkins and Mike Scott did not play, along with Keith Benson, Cartrell Johnson and Isma'il Muhammad. Coach Larry Drew said that it was part of his plan as he wants to give players (all 19 of them) that are trying to make the team some time to be evaluated. Zaza Pachulia did not dress due to a groin injury, nor did Devin Harris who is nursing a knee. Drew also said that the starting lineup will likely change on Wednesday when the Hawks go to San Antonio.
For the Miami Heat, Chris Bosh led all scorers with 22 points and six rebounds. LeBron James and Ray Allen both scored 10 points and point guard Norris Cole added 13. Dwyane Wade did not play.
Josh Smith is stepping up as the leader of the squad, he scored 21 points in 26 minutes with four rebounds and two steals. Lou Williams played 24 minutes and a lot of that was running point guard, he scored 18 points. DeShawn Stevenson added 11 points in the 92-79 victory over the Miami Heat.
